Staying in apartments in New York has become increasingly popular. And understandably so: many want to enjoy the city like locals do. And if you travel with your family, staying in an apartment is cheaper and more convenient than booking several hotel rooms. If you book your apartment through one of the well-known hotel booking websites, you’ll be assured of a place that is officially approved for short-term rental, which is not always the case when you book through a site like Airbnb, which offers privately owned apartments. Below I’ve listed a few good apartments in New York.
Sonder Apartments in New York offers luxury apartments in various locations in the city. Sonder offers self check-in, professional cleaning and spacious rooms with various amenities, such as high-speed WiFi and a good coffee maker.
Sonder at Battery Park
Sonder at Battery Park offers studios and suites in the bottom tip of Manhattan. Wall Street and the 9/11 Museum are within walking distance.
Sonder – One Platt
A little bit further, near the East River, you will find Sonder – One Platt. The 183 studios and suites are modernly furnished and the property has a roof terrace and fitness room.
Sonder – The Nash
Sonder – The Nash is located near the Chrysler Building. Here you can book a studio or a suite with a separate bedroom. Due to its central location, many sights are within walking distance.
The Beekman Tower Apartments
The Beekman Tower offers spacious suites close to Tutor City and the East River. The iconic building is located in a quiet area. You can choose between a studio, one bedroom or two bedroom apartment for your stay in New York. The apartment building has a rooftop bar as well. Here you can get a nice cocktail to end your day and enjoy the view over the city.
Radio City Apartments
The Radio City Apartments are located centrally, close to Times Square and Radio City Music Hall. There are various types of apartments available, from queen studios to one-bedroom apartments. All apartments have a kitchenette and free Wi-Fi.
Plum Guide in New York
Plum Guide is a website where you can book apartments. This website is an improved version of Airbnb. All places have been checked by the company and they also took the photos. This way you will get what you see and can look for the perfect place in New York.
Airbnb rules in NYC
Unfortunately, it is illegal in New York to rent a privately owned apartment for a short term. On Airbnb and other short-term rental platforms, hosts need to be officially registered with the city and short-term rentals are only permitted if you are staying in the same unit or apartment as your host, with no more than two paying guests at a time. So renting an entire apartment or home for less than 30 days is not allowed.
So when you book an entire apartment via for example Airbnb, know that this is often illegal. There’s no risk of getting a fine if you would book an apartment like that, but chances are that the host gets ‘caught’ and your booking will be cancelled. If this happens shortly before your trip, it might be difficult to still find a (decently priced) hotel room.
I’ve also heard a lot of complaints about people being scammed. The apartment wasn’t as the pictures described it to be or it even didn’t exist at all. Renting an apartment in New York also isn’t cheaper than booking a hotel room. The apartment itself might seem relatively cheap, but you often have to pay extra fees (like a cleaning and service fee) that can still make your stay rather pricey. Therefore I think you are better off staying in a hotel in New York or in a company-owned apartment booked via a hotel booking website, like the selection above.
