Jazz and Gospel on Broadway

The Color Purple takes place during the early twentieth century, in the southern United States. The musical tells the story of a young, black girl named Celie, who is abused by her father. This abuse results in the birth of several children. Celie’s father ‘takes care’ of these children and arranges for Celie to marry a local farmer who treats her as a help instead of a wife. Due to these circumstances, Celie has a low self esteem. She starts to change when she becomes friends with a singer (Hudson) who makes Celie believe that she can turn her life around. The Color Purple is a touching story with great jazz and gospel music, definitely worthwhile visiting!

How to buy The Color Purple on Broadway Tickets?

It is easy to buy tickets for The Color Purple with the link below. I recommend buying tickets online before your trip to New York. Why? You will save time and money and most importantly you don’t have to stress about finding tickets when you are in New York. A lot of Broadway musicals are very popular and are often sold out.

Buying a ticket is simple:

  • Click on the link and select the date you want to go
  • Fill in your information and pay
  • Check your email for the confirmation and voucher
  • Exchange your voucher at the theatre on the day of the show with valid photo ID

Seats are assigned by the theatre, which is why you won’t know your exact seating at the time of booking. Seat numbers will be clearly marked on the tickets. For bookings up to 4 people you are guaranteed seating next to one another. With larger groups the theatre will try its best.

Send me an email at eric@newyorkcity.ca if you want to book for groups of 9 people or more.

Eric’s Tip: The Color Purple is not your classic broadway musical with uplifting songs, spectacular decor and toe-tapping dance routines. It’s more ‘down to earth’ which really allows you to focus on the story and lyrics. The cast is incredible, and at the performance I attended the lead singer received a standing ovation during the show which is highly unusual. Definitely a favourite!
