Taxi from Newark to Manhattan

There are taxis outside the airport. However, a taxi from Newark Airport to Manhattan can easily cost US$100 to $120. Whatever you decide, only take a legal taxi even if someone approaches you with a taxi deal, those are illegal cabs.

Private Transfers

Do you want to travel from the airport to your hotel in a private, chauffeur-driven car with just yourself for company? And would you prefer to arrange your transport before you depart? Then book a private transfer in advance. There are various options for private transport available.

Value private transfer

Choose the value private transfer and have everything organized before your departure to New York. You only need to give them a quick call as soon as you have your bags and the driver will pick you up from outside the terminal.

If you would prefer to be collected by your driver in the arrivals hall, you can book this transfer. You give all your flight details before you travel and so there is no need to call when you arrive in New York. Your Chauffeur will meet you in the arrivals hall, holding a board with your name on it.

Large Shuttle Bus

Coach USA bus provides quick and cheap shuttle buses between Manhattan and Newark Airport. You can get on the bus at any terminal at Newark Airport. There is usually a sign from the bus company. Nonetheless, carefully read the information on the voucher and, if necessary, ask an airport employee where you should be.

No matter what time you choose when reserving the bus, as long as you have a ticket, you can always take a bus earlier or later. You don’t have to worry if your flight is delayed, for example. You can get off the bus at Port Authority Bus Terminal, Bryant Park or Grand Central Terminal. The journey to Manhattan takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on traffic. It is also possible to book a return ticket.

Shared Small Shuttle Buses

These shuttles will take you directly to the hotel or private residence where you are staying. They are a great way to travel to Manhattan from Newark Airport but most buses only go up to 125th Street in Manhattan. The shuttles take a bit longer than a taxi as they have to drop off several people along the way. Book your seat on the shuttle bus before you go. You will get a voucher via email that you have to print out. You will find the shuttle buses at “Ground Transportation” at every terminal in Newark Airport.

Eric’s Tip: “Taking a taxi from Newark is very expensive because they have a lot of extra fees. You have to pay per bag US$1 or $2 and $15.38 for tolls. In rush hour you pay an extra $5 and about $10 tip is common. Taking the train costs $15 and $2.90 from the subway to the hotel. A shuttle will bring you to your hotel/apartment. It might take a bit longer, but you just sit down and don’t have to think about a thing anymore. Pre-booking your shuttle bus or limousine is necessary.”

NJ Transit Train

The New Jersey Transit trains connect Newark to Penn Station in Manhattan. To get to the train station, you first need to take the AirTrain from one of the terminals. Together, the train journey to Manhattan and the AirTrain cost US$16. Tickets just for the AirTrain cost $8.50. When you arrive in Manhattan you will need to take a subway or taxi to get to your hotel. This is my least favourite transfer option from Newark to Manhattan.

Helicopter Transfer

Travel in luxury during a helicopter transfer from Newark Airport to Manhattan. You will fly into the city within 10 minutes, taking in the scenery along the way.
